Busitema University joins 2025 Run for Mathematics Marathon in Tororo

The Association of Women Mathematicians Uganda (AWoM) in conjunction with Busitema University held a successful run dubbed “Run4Math8” marathon.

This was held at the Tororo Girls’ school sports ground on Saturday, 15th March 2025.

The marathon was held alongside the theme “Mathematics, Art, and Creativity”.

The Association of Women Mathematicians Uganda (AWoM) champions quality mathematics education in Uganda, focusing on empowering girls.

Since 2018, AWoM has organized the International Day of Mathematics (IDM) activities, declared globally by UNESCO in 2017.

In the same vein, Busitema University has made remarkable contributions to promoting science education among girls, including hosting impactful events like the Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) Symposium, Sports Gender Round Table and addressing systemic barriers to girls’ education.

Dr. Agnes Baluka Masajja, the deputy chief sports for Busitema University, provided technical support regarding the run and the marching.

The Vice Chancellor Busitema University hinted that sports is a good sensitization tool.

For example; the day’s run showed that women should be resilient and complete mathematical tasks like the had laboured to complete the run.

He encouraged mathematics teachers and lecturers to make mathematical concepts simple for students to understand.

For instance, Pi comes from the ratio of the circumference of any circular object and its diameter. Which gives you 22/7.

High profile guests on the high-table

The chief runner was Engineer Ziiria Tibalwa Waako, the CEO of Electricity Regulatory Authority, who congratulated her fellow Runners upon successfully completing the run.

She encouraged the girls to love and do mathematics because it’s a core subject that is integrated in all the other subjects.

The chief guest, professor Saphina Biira, who is also the deputy vice chancellor and the second female professor of physics in Uganda encouraged the girls to take on sciences more so mathematics.

To her, what a man can do, women too can do even better; a philosophy that has taken her heights.

The run was around Tororo town to sensitize girls in Eastern Uganda to like mathematics.

Over 12 schools participated from Busia, Tororo and Mbale District. Also, boys’ schools as St. Peter’s college also participated to support the girl child.

Busitema University students were the day’s volunteers and hosts to encourage their siblings.

The day was colourful with a band march for those who decided to walk.

Lots of gifts, medals and certificates were awarded to the winners.

A bandwagon of sponsors joined hands to make the day colourful.

These included; EAN Wobas, Busitema University, Uganda Mathematical Society, UNESCO, Makerere University, Simplifi networks, sumz foods, among others.
