In a society where excess weight can often impede self-confidence and limit opportunities, 17-year-old Dan Tumukunde has defied the odds.

Transforming his weight loss journey into a flourishing career in weightlifting, Tumukunde’s inspiring story is one of resilience and determination, overcoming personal and financial challenges to rise as a promising athlete.

After completing his Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) final examinations, Tumukunde faced a major setback.

Financial constraints prevented him from continuing his education, as his mother struggled to provide for him and his siblings.

With limited options, Tumukunde turned his focus to fitness as a means of rebuilding his confidence after enduring years of body shaming.

His initial goal was simple: to shed weight and regain self-esteem.

Tumukunde joined the renowned Kisugu Unified Gym, a training ground for elite weightlifting athletes, including Tokyo 2020 competitor Julius Ssekitoleko.

While focusing on general fitness, Tumukunde’s natural strength caught the attention of Coach Ivan Masakwe, who encouraged him to explore weightlifting.

“Dan (Tumukunde) came to the gym to lose weight, but as a coach, I saw potential in him. As he progressed, I suggested he try weightlifting—not only to maintain his fitness but also to build a career since he was still young,” said Masakwe in an interview with NBS Sport.

Weightlifting, however, required more than raw strength. Tumukunde dedicated himself to mastering the sport’s fundamentals, including flexibility, mobility, and endurance.

Through rigorous training, he achieved remarkable feats, including a maximum clean and jerk of 220 kilograms, a squat of 230 kilograms, and a deadlift of 240 kilograms—all at just 17 years old.

“I had to learn the sport’s basics because weightlifting demands not just strength but also mobility and energy,” Tumukunde said.

His dedication has paid off. Tumukunde clinched a gold medal at the Uzani Games Power Weekend IV U23 in Nairobi in December 2022.

He followed this with an extraordinary performance at the 2023 Youth and Junior African Championships in Cairo, Egypt, where he secured seven medals, including three gold in the youth category and three silver in the junior category, earning him the title of African Youth Champion.

Coach Masakwe believes Tumukunde’s potential is limitless. “With the discipline to follow the right training and guidance, this boy is destined for greater success. As an African Youth Champion, he is on track to become the next big thing in the sport,” he said.

Despite his achievements, Tumukunde faces significant challenges.

Financial constraints hinder his ability to access supplements, proper gym equipment, and transportation, with long walks to the gym straining his knees after heavy workouts.

Without a job, he trains tirelessly but struggles to meet the basic needs necessary for his growth as an athlete.

“I lack the funds for supplements, and walking to the gym strains my knees. I can’t afford better-equipped gyms or the resources needed for muscle growth and recovery,” Tumukunde explained.

His aspirations include securing an Olympic gold medal and representing Uganda on the global stage.

However, he urgently needs sponsorship to support his training, nutrition, and competition expenses.

Tumukunde’s plea is simple but profound: a call for sponsors who share a passion for sports and believe in his potential.

Currently, Tumukunde is among 12 athletes vying for a place on Uganda’s weightlifting national team for the upcoming Africa Weightlifting Championship in Cairo, Egypt, in February 2024.

With the right support, this young athlete could soar to even greater heights, inspiring a generation with his remarkable journey.

He also secured a scholarship at Victoria University, pursuing a Certificate in Computer Science.
