With the exception of Egypt, the rest of the African ambassadors (Guinea, Morocco and Mali) all lost their duels.
Rogerio Micale’s coached Egypt overcame Uzebekistan 1-0 in a group C contest at the Stade de la Beaujoire.
Ahmed Nabil Koka’s early goal in the 11th minute was well defended by the Egyptians in a game handled by New Zealand referee Campbell Kirk Waugh.
The other group C match had Spain win 3-1 over10-man-Dominican Republic at the Matmut Atlantique stadium.
Fermin Lopez, Alex Baena and Miguel Gutierrez scored for Spain.
Angel Montes de Oca got the consolation for Dominican Republic who had Edison Azcona sent off by referee Adel Ali Ahmed Khamis Al Naqbi from United Arab Emirates on the stoke of half time.
Guinea fell 0-1 to France at the Allianz Riviera stadium. Michael Olisse assisted Killiann Sildilla’s goal in the 76th minute.
The game was officiated by Ilgiz Tantshev from Uzebekistan.
United States of America (USA) white-washed New Zealand 4-1 in the other group A contest played at the Stade Orange Velodrome under referee Glenn Nyberg from Sweden.
Djordje Mihailovic, Walker Zimmerman, Gianluca Busio and Paxten Aaronson were on target for USA.
Jesse Sutton’s goal with 12 minutes to play turned out to be the consolation for New Zealand.
At the Stade Geoffroy Guichard stadium, a 10 man Ukraine defeated Morocco 2-1.
Dmytro Kryskiv gave Ukraine the lead on 21 minutes. Ukraine lost Volodumyr Khlan who was sent off for unsporting conduct in the 63rd minute.
A minute later, Soufiane Rahimi found the equalizer to make the game squared at 1-goal apiece.
Igor Krasnopir restored Ukraine’s lead off Oleg Fedor’s assist in the 8th minute of added time.
Also in group B, Argentina was ruthless and bullish with a 3-1 over Iraq at the Groupama stadium.
Thiago Almada gave Argentina the lead on the quarter hour mark. Aymen Hussein cancelled the advantage with the equalizer on the stroke of half time.
The Argentines needed two second half goals from Luciano Gondou and Ezequiel Fernandez to seal the victory.
Brazilian referee Edina Alves Batista was in charge of Japan’s 1-0 loss to Mali at the Matmut Atlantique stadium.
Rihito Yamamoto scored the match winner on 55 minutes in group D. Mali had a chance to secure at least a point but Cheicka Doumbia missed a penalty in the 6th minute of extra time.
In the other group D encounter, Paraguay won 4-2 over Israel at the Parc de Princes stadium.
Paraguay scored through Marcelo Fernandez’s brace, Julie Enciso and Fabian Balbuena.
Omri Gandelman and Oscar Gloukh replied for Israel making the game tied 2-all heading to added time.
Drew Fischer from Canada was the match referee.
Action switches to the women games on Sunday, 29th July 2024.
New Zealand faces Colombia in group A. The other game in the same pool will be hosts France against Canada.
In group B; Australia will face Zambia and USA against Germany.
Group C has Brazil against Japan and Spain tussling against Nigeria.
