Heathens RFC have officially announced the appointment of Tolbert Onyango as their new head coach.

This follows the departure of Muhammad Athiyo who had been at the helm of the Kyadondo-based club for the past decade.

The announcement of Onyango was made on Thursday, with speculation in the media already citing the National Rugby 7s coach as the next in line to take on the reins and levers of the yellow machine.

Tolbert Onyango, who has coached the Toyota Buffaloes in the years gone by, is a Kyadondo stalwart, and he is expected to steer the Heathens back to glory. His first assignment is to retain the national 7s title which the Heathens won last year after 12 years in limbo. This should be a walk in the park for the Kenyan tactician who has led the Uganda Rugby 7s to 3 Rugby Africa titles and numerous continental and global competitions.

The looming question now is: who shall make up his backroom staff? The letter by Heathens RFC states that the announcement of the full newly appointed coaching team shall be announced in due course, but some names have been thrown in the hat. Strength and conditioning coach, Allan Otim is expected to make a return to the team while Emmanuel Katuntu is likely to continue the work he had started with the Heathens backs under the previous coaching regime.

The new coaching team shall have the same group of players to work with, between now and the end of the Rugby 7s season, when they can bring in reinforcements for the Uganda Cup, if it happens.
