UMEA Games 2025: Gombe Secondary School clinch historic Handball double

Gombe Secondary School won a historic double in Handball during the 2025 Uganda Muslim Education Association (UMEA) Games hosted by Namagabi SS in Kayunga district.

During the final games played on Easter Monday, Gombe SS defeated Mbogo High 25-22 to win the girls’ title.

For the boys, Gombe SS overcame Mbogo Mixed 29-17.

The gruelling group matches commenced on Good Friday with thrilling action per gender.

In some of the earlier games played, Gombe SS boys’ team convincingly hammered Bombo SS 51-16, puffed off Kawanda S.S 18-12 and edged a hard-fighting Kakungulu Memorial 23-17.

On the other front, the girls humbled Kawanda SS 28-20, out-muscled Kibuli 28-22, humiliated Mbogo Mixed 51-06, beat Kakungulu Memorial 32-17 and had no respect for Bombo SS with a 52-15 victory.

Team composition:

The Gombe SS girls’ team was spurred by the star player Bridget Ayikoru, Brenda Kwiochwiny, Flavia Nakawala, Blessing Irene Acangome, Daphine Adong, Ruth Alimo and Ritah Ato among others.

The triumphant boys’ squad had Ramsey Bakaaki, Daniel Olem, Patrick Oryema, Raymond Epwosu, Mushin Ntegeka and Sylvester Katende, among other players.

Head coach Yakub Aziz applauded the effort of his players in winning the championship for both genders.

In the same vein, he also saluted the rest of the backroom staff, games department and school management, especially the head teacher for the overwhelming support.

With outstanding teamwork, resilience, and skill, our boys and girls’ teams showcased true champions’ spirit, overcoming fierce competition to lift both trophies. This historic double victory is a testament to the hard work of our players, coaches, and the unwavering support of our Head Teacher Hajji Abduh Zimbe. We are proud to continue setting the standard for excellence in handball and inspiring future generations.

Gombe SS took the girl’s gold with 12 points. Mbogo High had 10 points and earned silver whilst Kibuli SS scored 6 points for bronze.

Bridget Ayikoru from Gombe SS was the girls’ most valuable player (MVP).

For boys, Gombe SS clinched gold, with Mbogo Mixed bagging silver and Kawanda SS settling for bronze.

Ismail Kabugo (Mbogo Mixed) was the MVP for boys.

Meanwhile, Gombe SS also won two gold medals in the chess sport.

Besides handball and chess, action in the UMEA 2025 games included Football, Volleyball and Badminton.

The games are played by all schools with an Islamic foundation in Uganda.
