This year’s FIM Central African motocross challenge (CAC) will celebrate a huge milestone.

The regional event scheduled for the Easter weekend in Mityana district will mark 20 years since its initiation.

CAC picked recognition by FIM Africa (then called Africa Motorcycling Union) in 2005.

Before its inauguration, regional events were merely organised to foster growth of MX in the region and were not recognized by the MX world body.

Arthur Blick Jr, the FMU Deputy president for Motorcycling(DVP) and multiple MX champion narrates the competition growth.

“I and Maina Muturi from Kenya pushed for the CAC to be recognized in 2005. That time I was in my first term in office as the DVP, and one of the first achievement I made was to bring CAC series,” said Blick.

“Those days we didn’t have a proper track. The first event happened in Lubiri and since then we have not looked back,” he added.

The CAC series run twice in a year; with Uganda and Kenya organising one event each.

“Before the series, we used to just make trips to Kenya for fun until we decided to make them official. The series still remained between two organisers but attracted other riders from the region,” said Arthur.

The CAC proved a major catalyst for the development of Motocross in Uganda.

“These series have been a huge milestone for Uganda. MX development is attributed to these series because we started looking at points and we tried to improve to be better than Kenya.”

“In the initial events Kenyans used to beat us hands down. They were so fast compared to us. But because of that we started working towards our development in pace, tracks and other aspects,” said Blick.

The CAC makes the first trip to Mityana and gets off on Saturday with technical checks before a practice heat in the morning. Heat one will be covered later in the day. The two remaining heats will be covered on Sunday.

For the first time, the Kenyan team did not send any representative for this year’s round. Only Tanzania will face off with Uganda.

The event will also double as round three of the national motocross championship.
