Somalia frustrate Guinea as Algeria move top of Group G | 2026 World Cup qualifiers

  • Botswana 1-3 Algeria

Algeria moved top of group G of the Fifa World Cup qualifiers for the 2026 edition after beating hosts Botswana 3-1 in Francis Town on Friday.

Amine Gouiri gave the Desert Foxes the lead towards the end of the first half before Mohamed Amoura scored a second half brace to seal victory for the Algerians.

Tebogo Kopelang scored the hosts’ consolation as Algeria moved joint top with 12 points same as Mozambique that saw off Uganda Cranes on Thursday.

In the same group, Guinea wasted several opportunities in the goalless draw with minnows Somalia in Morocco.

The West African side led by Michel Dussuyer dominated proceedings registering 15 attempts on target but couldn’t get past by the goalkeeper.

Action in this group will continue on match day six with Guinea travelling to Uganda while Algeria face Mozambique in a top of the table clash with Botswana battling Somalia.

Elsewhere, Nigeria registered their first win of the campaign with a 2-0 win away to Rwanda thanks to a double from Victor Osimhen, South Africa beat Lesotho 2-0, Egypt overcame CHAD 2-0 while Morocco were 2-1 winners over Niger.
