Namuwongo Blazers secured a hard-fought 81-80 victory against City Oilers in the 2025 National Basketball League opener at the Lugogo Indoor Arena on Friday.

Despite missing the services of Fayed Baale, Titus Lual and Ivan Muhwezi, Nam Blazers dug deep to secure the victory on the day.

It was a thrilling show as City Oilers opened a seven-point (17-10) lead at the end of the opening quarter.

In the second quarter, Namuwongo Blazers went to a full-court press and man-to-man defence limiting City Oilers to 17 points as they trailed by five points (34-29) going into the long break.

Despite the strong fight from the Blazers, they trailed by a point (55-54) at the end of the third quarter. Allawi Ssenkubuge made a big block at the buzzer to deny Innocent Ochera a shot beyond the arc.

It was not the perfect debut for Joseph Chuma after fouling out with eight minutes on the clock in the final quarter.

The game was tied 80-80 with eight seconds to play and had to be decided by a foul shot from Mugisha who was sent to the line with a second on the clock.

Ben Komakech (18 points), Edgar Munaaba (12 points) and Joseph Chuma (10 points) led City Oilers’ scoring chart.

On the other hand, Jimmy Enabu (19 points) and Peter Obleng (11 points) are the only players who managed double-digit scoring for the Blazers.
