The two Makerere-based rugby teams have been relegated from the 2024 Nile Special Rugby men’s Championship.

Impis and Lifeguard Rams, which host their matches at The Graveyard, lost their respective ties in the Relegation Playoffs.

The landlords Impis choked under pressure from Eagles in their own backyard on Sunday afternoon. The first round was a thirteen-all draw but Eagles dominated the second round to win by 36-23 (49-36 aggregate) points.

The tenants Rams had fallen short by just one point (24-23 the result) against Warriors on Saturday evening. The aggregate score was 49-39 in the tie over the two rounds.

Consequently, for the first time in over a decade, there will be no Makerere-based team in the men’s top flight XVs tournament in Uganda. Impis and Rams have dropped to the Central Regional Championship.

It will take at least two years for both teams to bounce back to the top-flight. This is because only one team per region can take part in the promotional playoffs.

This year’s promotional playoffs involving the regional champions are already ongoing and will conclude next Saturday. The top two teams, from among Victoria Sharks (Central), Elgon Wolves (Eastern), Gulu City Falcons (Northern), and Kigezi Silverbacks (Western), will be promoted to the 2025 championship.
