The curtain comes down on the Women’s T20 League this weekend with the defending champions Soroti City taking on Olila CC.

Soroti City made light work of Wanderers in the semifinals, winning by 8 wickets while Olila CC upset hosts Jinja SS to win by 13 runs.

Olila CC won the T20 League in 2017 but with a side that is different in composition from the current crop. The current Olila CC team is full of youth with some of the most exciting players in ladies’ cricket. U-19 girls Captain Jimia Mohammad, Malisa Ariokot, Lona Anyait, Asumin Akurut, and Immaculate Nandera make up the core of the team with Phiona Khulume and Sarah Akiteng offering the experience whenever required.

Victoria Pearls’ Phiona Khulume stepped up in the game against Wanderers winning the player of match award in both games as Olila CC pushed for top spot in Group B. Olila CC has relied on its bowling to win games and in the semifinal, against a more fancied opponent, they managed to defend a small total of 90 against a very strong batting line up. Sarah Akiteng who had the best bowling figures of 3/5 and a mind-boggling economy of 1.9 will be one of the key players for Olila CC in the final.

Soroti City had the easy path to the final, putting away Wanderers without breaking a sweat but they will not have it their way in the final. Soroti City came out of Group A bruised as they dropped points against Tornado Bee but they had done enough to get ahead of the catching pack.

Soroti City is packed with hard hitters with Victoria Pearls experience of Proscovia Alako, Janet Mbabazi, and Evelyn Anyipo forming the core of the side together with the exciting youngsters Naume Amogin, Kevin Amuge and Apolot Patricia.

Victoria Pearls Captain Janet Mbabazi has had a quiet series because most times she has not been required to step up but she is one of the big occasion and led from the front in the semifinal win but her side will be hoping she has saved the best for last.

The clash made in Soroti can be likened to second born challenging first born with both sides with players who know each other well. There will be some divided loyalties for the Soroti Cricket Academy fans but an opportunity to attract new followers as well.

Olila CC is the underdog but one who can pack a great punch. Soroti City will need to be on their A-game to get past the second born otherwise there might be a new favourite child in the Soroti Cricket Academy family.

Both sides are looking for a second T20 title. Olila CC were winners in 2017 while Soroti City were winners last year after ending Aziz Damani’s run for four seasons.
