Olympics 2024: Uganda’s gallant Marathon team in Paris

The XXXIII Olympiad in France will be officially closed on Sunday, 11th August 2024 after the Women’s Marathon.

A day earlier, it will be the Men’s Marathon, one of the eagerly awaited events at this competition.

The men’s squad has Victor Kiplangat, Stephen Kissa and Andrew Rotich Kwemboi.

Kiplangat, 22, is best known for his gold medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham (Marathon) as well as another gold in the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest.

Kissa is an experienced 28-year-old long-distance runner whilst Kwemboi is a 23-year-old.

The women marathoners are Stella Chesang, Rebecca Cheptegei and Mercyline Chelangat.

Chesang, 28, won a gold medal in the 2018 Commonwealth Games (10,000m). Rebecca Cheptegei won the Padova Marathon and was second in the 10,000m at the Ugandan Championships, Mandela National Stadium, Kampala.

Mercyline Chelangat, 26, will be competing at the second Olympics.

The marathon was the last to arrive in Paris city this week and checked in at the games village.

Team Uganda had a delegation of 25 members, 21 of whom are from athletics.

The others were from swimming (2), rowing (1) and cycling (1).

The closing ceremony will be held at Stade de France on Sunday, 11th August 2024.
