SC Villa will hope to make a return to the Cecafa Kagame Cup on winning ways when they face South Sudan’s Al Merriekh Bentiu at Azam Complex, Chamazi.
The fixture will be preceded by two more matches on the opening day of the competition as JKU vs Al Wadi officially kicks off the 2024 edition, the first since 2021 while APR vs Singinda Blacks will come later.
Dusan Stojanovic’s team start life with nearly a new backline following departures of skipper Kenneth Ssemakula while right and left backs Gavin Kizito and Joseph Kafumbe, on the brink of leaving the club are not part of the squad in Dar es Salaam.
But with Patrick Kakande, Ronald Ssekiganda, Charles Lwanga, Hakim Kiwanuka and Arnold Odong available, the Serbian has part of the skeleton that won the league last season.
How will the Jogoos line up?
With Norman Angufinduru back to fitness, it remains to be seen whether he will dislodge Jean Braddy Wokorach who finished the campaign as the undisputed number one.
David Owori is expected to slot in at right back after being named amongst the defenders with fit again Arnold Odong and either of Edward Masembe or Cyrus Kibande at the heart of defence.
New signings Denis Kaka Omony and Kato Semayange will battle for the left back position but the former is likely to get a starting berth.
In the middle, UPL midfielder of the season Ronald Ssekiganda is expected to feature along with Misi Diego Ssemugera with either of Elvis Ngonde or Isaac Mpagi featuring in the no.10 role behind Charles Lwanga with Hakim Kiwanuka and league MVP Patrick Kakande on the right and left of a three-man attack.
