Following a trophyless season, Vipers SC are planning a massive clear out with over ten players expected to leave the club.

The Venoms, despite finishing third and just a point behind league winners SC Villa were unimpressive with their performance this season.

It’s the underwhelming performance more than the results that have left the hierarchy with big decisions to make in the summer if they are to be competitive next season.

Every position, from goal to the striking line is under scrutiny but one area that needs to be sorted as soon as possible is the head coaching role.

Richard Wasswa completed the season as head on interim but it will be hard to keep him in that role especially with reports that he failed to have full control on the dressing room.

In goal, the club must make a decision on two foreign goalkeepers, Fabien Mutombora and Alfred Mudekereza – the former missing the last part of the campaign after reportedly falling out with the coaching staff and even refusing to be in the match day squad as long as he isn’t starting games.

With two promising youngsters in Jack Komakech and Derrick Kiggundu, the club could let one or the two foreigners leave.

In defence, Vipers could jettison up to five players – Ashraf Mandela, Richard Matovu, Isa Mubiru, Murushid Jjuuko and Livingstone Mulondo although the latter has shown his value with his never say die attitude whenever selected.

In midfield, long serving midfield enforcer Siraje Sentamu and Moses Waiswa – both were limited to a few games as the season got to the business end could be offloaded as well as Nigerian Abubaker Lawal.

Frank Katongole, back from injury Marvin Youngman could be trusted in that role along with any other new signing and the promising Bright Anukani and Karim Watambala other complementary options in the middle of the pack.

Karisa, Yunus Credit: John Batanudde

On the wings, it could be a similar story with the club ready to let go of Martin Kiiza and Captain Milton Karisa – arguably their best attacking players with nine goals last season.

Yunus Sentamu has been a shadow of the player who has previously played with influence in attack and his numbers just last season haven’t been impressive.

The former immediate champions could offload him as well creating space for uprising stars like Fazil Tumwine.

Mauritanian Ekbad Saleem Credit: Vipers SC

Mauritanian Ekbad Salem and Eric Kambale – both rarely given a run out in the team have also played with less confidence and a big decision awaits on them.

With the club not competing in any Caf competition this season, the money that would have been spent is available and so the powers that be at the club have what to spend on transfers but first, the dilemma of the coaching staff must be solved first.
