Mbarara City FC boosted their hopes of surviving relegation from this season’s Uganda Premier League after overcoming Wakiso Giants FC on Tuesday.

In the relegation six-pointer played at Kabaka Kyabaggu Stadium, the Ankole Lions secured a 1-0 win over the Purple Sharks.

The two teams came into today’s game in a tough situation and needed victory to brighten their chances of surviving the relegation monster.

Mbarara City also came into the game without coach Livingstone Mbabazi who was sacked on Saturday.

Defender-cum winger Peter Onzima scored the lone goal to guide Mbarara City to victory.

The goal arrived in the 83rd minute, a result that could be very vital for the Ankole Lions with three games to play.

Before that, Wakiso Giants had a chance to take the lead just after three minutes when Marvin Oshawa was fouled in the box. The striker took the resultant penalty but fired wide.

At the half-hour mark, the Purple Sharks had defender Shaibu Mtita sent off for a last-man foul on Henry Kitegenyi.

Despite playing with a man less, Wakiso Giants kept competing until the 83rd minute when they conceded.

The result means Wakiso Giants must win all their remaining three games against URA FC, KCCA FC and Police FC but also hope Mbarara City FC don’t win.

On the other hand, Mbarara City FC, who are 13th on 26 points, need just three points from the remaining three games.
