Victoria Cup 2025: Uganda golf team officially flagged off with optimism

The Uganda national golf team is due to face Kenya in the annual Victoria Cup at the Mt. Kipipiri Golf resort course in Naivasha.

The team was officially flagged by Sarah Chelangat, the acting assistant general secretary at National Council of Sports (NCS) on Wednesday, 12th March 2025.

“When I look in your eyes, I see talent, hunger and a zeal to win” Chelangat noted.

“Go and perform to the best of your ability because I know that all of young men have the ability to return with the trophy” she added.

The team is coached by female golf professional Sergeant Flavia Namakula.

They are led by the vastly experienced Joseph Cwinya-ai who currently is ranked 310th on the world amateur ranking system.

The reigning Uganda amateur open champion Joseph Reagan Akena, currently ranked 298th in the world is also part of the 10-man team.

Others include Titus Okwong (615th ranking), Elton Thembo (1413th global ranking), John Musiimenta (4898th), Abdul Kakeeto (1829th), Abdallah Kakooza (3910th) as well as the juniors Ibrahim Ssemakula (18 years old), Anthony Otukei (16 years) and the 15-year-old Peter Mayende.

Ssemakula is ranked 4294th in the entire world, Otukei is 4898th while Mayende is not ranked.

Three of the golfers; Cwinya-ai, Akena and Okwong are already in Kenya for the Kenya Amateur Golf series.

Uganda Golf Union president Jackson Were believes the team has the firepower to encounter Kenya, a seasoned opposition with great players as John Lejirma and Ebill Omollo.

Others on the team include; Daniel Kiragu, Soni Tsevi, Elvis Muigua, Josphat Rono, Elly Barno, Kevin Anyien, Rafael Lemingani and Krish Shah.

“Kenya are familiar opponents. We know that we can match them punch-for-punch” Were vowed.

The team departed for Kenya on Wednesday and have at least a week of acclimatization before action tees off on the 20th March 2025.

Paul Habyarimana will travel as team manager.

Kenya who are coached by John Van Liefland are the defending champions.
