Restoring River Mpanga: A Hands-On Approach

The cleanup campaign involved the removal of plastic wastes and other pollutants from the streets of Mpanga Market, Fort Portal and along the banks of River Mpanga.

Volunteers were equipped with gloves, rakes, and had waste collection bags, worked tirelessly to rid the environment of harmful materials that clog water channels and threaten aquatic life.

In addition to collecting plastic bottles and non-biodegradable waste, participants unclogged drainage channels that flow into River Mpanga, ensuring that water could move freely and reducing the risk of flooding and waterborne diseases.

The exercise not only improved the river’s flow but also contributed to the long-term restoration of the ecosystem.

A significant milestone of the event was the installation of a protective pillar at Nyakimya Swamp, a critical wetland area that plays a vital role in water filtration and biodiversity conservation.

This symbolic gesture emphasized the need to safeguard wetlands from encroachment and pollution, ensuring their ability to serve as natural water reservoirs and habitats for wildlife.
