KCB KOBs Rugby Club retained the Patrick Mileke Shield for the fifth successive year, beating Warriors Rugby Club by 43-03 points in the first meeting of this year on Saturday evening.
The Mileke Shield is played between KOBs and Warriors to honour the Late Patrick Othieno Mileke Aredo’s contribution to Ugandan rugby. His sons Erasmus & Gabriel (both Warriors) and Joseph Aredo (KOBs) feature for the two clubs.

Having also played on the same team, Gabriel and Joseph described playing against each other in somewhat similar ways — using their knowledge of each other to gain an advantage for their teams.
“We used to play together, now we play against each other. But it’s always the same thing — we are playing rugby. Everybody knows the other guy’s strengths so we try to get one over the other every time we get a chance. However, clearly, one guy is getting the better of us,” Gabriel Aredo said.
“If you’ve watched, there’s an animation called ‘The Elusive Samurai’. It is a game of tag. If you’re it, I have to avoid you. So it’s just a way of dodging them and making sure you hit the gap and put your team forward. A number of times I had the advantage over them and I made sure we maximised it,” Joseph Aredo said.
Both acknowledged the fact that Joseph has enjoyed unchallenged success against Gabriel and Erasmus. KOBs has beaten Warriors in all six Mileke Shield meetings since 2020.
Other Siblings in Ugandan Rugby
The Aredo brothers are not a unique case in the land. Ugandan rugby is laden with multiple siblings active both as players and officials.
They include Philip Wokorach (RC Orleans) & Innocent Gwokto (Heathens), the Bagalana — Tawfik, Aziz, Ayman & Meddy brothers, Byron Oketayot (KOBs) & Morgan Odoch (Victoria Sharks), Trevor Maina (KOBs) & Martin Arembe (Rhinos), Timothy Odongo & Jeremiah Okello both of Pirates, and Charlotte (Black Pearls), Timothy (KOBs) & Fred Mudoola (Uganda Rugby Cranes).
There are twins too. Yasin Wasswa (Hippos) and Minat Namono (Nile Rapids), Jeremiah Wasswa (Thunderbirds) & Nicholas Kato (Heathens), Thunderbirds’ Tamara Acen & Phyllis Apio, and Arnold Ocen & Arthur Opio both of Rhinos.
