Girls Schools Cricket Week hosts St Mary’s Madera will have a bitter taste in their mouths for letting a semifinal place slip through their hands.

A poor run of games had them losing three games on the bounce to lose their semifinal place to newcomers Sacred Heart SS.

Sacred Heart SS ensured that they took care of their business to put pressure on St Mary’s Madera and waited for them to slip up.

Sacred Hearts SS took care of Kilembe SS and Ndejje SS on the final day of the group games to leapfrog the hosts St Mary’s Madera.

St Mary’s Madera just needed one result from their two final group games but fell to group winners Light SS and Kilembe SS to lose second place after being in that position for most of the tournament.

In Group A, Olila High School sailed through unbeaten but the race for second place was late in the afternoon after the Masaka SS and Good Heart encounter.

Jinja SS, Iganga SS and Masaka SS were all tied on the same number of points but only separated by Net Run Rate with Jinja SS having the better Net Run Rate. Jinja SS pushed their case with a big win against Masindi SS which only made the job harder for Masaka SS and in the other game, Iganga SS picked the win against St John’s Mukono but the laboured effort didn’t help their cause and ruled themselves out of the semifinal race.

Masaka SS posted a big total against Good Heart SS but the win was not a thumping one to help them overturn Jinja SS’s Net Run Rate thereby missing out on a semifinal place.

The defending champions Olila High School earned a date with the newcomers in what looks like the easy semifinal while their home rivals Light SS will have to compete against a determined Jinja SS to make their second consecutive final.

The semifinals will be played on Saturday morning with the finals coming up in the afternoon.

The seven-day tournament will have the best 20 players selected for a U-19 training camp to select a team that will represent Uganda at the U-19 World Cup Qualifiers in Kigali Rwanda in August this year.
