You are being misled – FMU’s Akena hits back at NCS, IG

The Federation of Motorsport Clubs of Uganda (FMU) president Jimmy Akena has expressed disappointment in the National Council of Sports’ handling of the governance saga.

Akena has lashed out at the National Council for Sports (NCS) and the Inspectorate of Government (IG) over their handling of FMU matters before them.

In a strongly expressed letter, Akena says both government organs are being misled in making orders that could greatly affect the motorsport body.

Last month, the IGG demanded that the NCS order the motorsport body to conduct another election. The IGG, in her letter, says that FMU’s current management is illegally in office and ordered a dissolution.

The IGG based her decision on a High Court ruling in July this year. The matter before court then revolved around the calling of an Extraordinary Assembly and the Constitutional Review which the applicant Geoffrey Nsamba, a former rally driver, petitioned court about.

FMU has since appealed the matter.

However, in a shocking turn of events, the IG claims her orders are based on the July ruling to which NCS acted by ordering FMU to hold fresh elections in a month.

Akena in his response to the NCS emphasised that the elective assembly was conducted legally and it was done in accordance with the guidance of the National Council of Sports.  The NCS General Secretary Patrick Ogwel later acknowledged the new management and wrote a report to the IG in May this year.

“I am honestly perturbed and shocked by the content and language…” reads an excerpt of the letter from the FMU President to NCS.

“As stated earlier the process leading to the election of the current FMU Management Team was deeply enriched with your and the Minister’s guidance as given in your “BRIEF REPORT ON MATTERS OF THE FEDERATION OF MOTORSPORT CLUBS OF UGANDA (FMU)”  wrote Akena in his response.

“Using language such as found your current management/leadership.. is illegal in office”; “ordered fresh elections to be organised within one month”; and “NCS to stop funding activities of the Federation” on an evidentially false premise is both malicious and libellous,” he emphasized.

FMU has written to the IG asserting its stand on its legal existence and that the ombudsman’s is being used to cause disorder within motorsport.

The existing challenges started in December last year; prior to the federation’s elections.

Kawowo has learnt that at least two former heads of the federation and former competitors have been implicated in the matters that are unsettling FMU.

The motorsport federation has for the past four years been rocked by governance issues. These got to the highest when the federation moved to re-align its governance by drafting a new constitution.

Kawowo Sports has learnt that a similar letter from the federation has been sent to the IG outlining the current position of the federation.

But how far will FMU be in the limelight over governance issues?

From the letters, it is evident that the NCS, a body supposed to regulate the federation, is obscure about the facts of the situation.

What are the actual intentions of the whistleblowers of the IGG that initiated an investigation into the federation?

Is the IG misled or is that it has failed to get the right channel to resolve the motorsport body saga?
